Hearthstone Family Christmas

Christmas time again... That meant another family get together at Hearthstone in Green Lake... Last year I went to their family Christmas and this year they invited me back again.

Eleanor lives at Hearthstone.. It is a beautiful retirement/nursing home in Seattle and they are nice enough to let them celebrate Christmas together as a family there. This year I brought my Photo Booth. It was really the first time using it so I wasn't sure how people would like it. This family has the perfect personality for it and it really turned out to be a hit. It is so nice to see laughter, love and celebration as a family.

I can't wait to see you all next year!

I was trying to come up with a clever way to combine "frog" and "dog" for a catchy title...What I came up with....Froggie! Ha ha... Shows my lack of creativity tonight! Anyway, I bought Halloween costumes for kiddos and Sadie is such a good sport and is always my "tester." Needless to say, she definitely makes me smile. She had me in hysterics this night... Here are a couple images ....

And, Syd brought out this little guy.... He is just the sweetest thing ever! He was the perfect size for the cow suit and boy is he adorable in it too!

Brandon Senior Portraits

Brandon....Here's what I have to say about him....Probably one of the nicest guys I have met....Yes, I know sometimes people overuse that phrase, but Brandon really is. After I posted his senior session, I received an e-mail from him thanking me for taking photos of him and "bringing out the best in him." Yes, maybe he threw in there that he is a "good model" (which he is) ha ha...But, I thought that was very nice of him to do.

Besides that, he is super smart (I think he said a 4.0 GPA) AND a great basketball player. (Complete with his own court in his backyard). Yep, I'd say this guy is pretty cool!

First, I have to say....When my mom first saw the images from this family, her immediate response was, "Wow, is EVERYONE in Washington beautiful??" :) I had to agree and not only does this family have good looks, but they also have great personalities...

I was at their home shooting Brandon's senior portraits. While I was there, we did family portraits too. It really was a lot of fun. They have a great home/yard for photographers to play in. Here are a few images from their session.

Well, they're not really babies anymore!! I went home to see them this summer. It had been 15 MONTHS since I had seen them and I was soooo excited to be able to actually hug and kiss them and not just skype them. (Although we do have some fun over skype). They ran to me at the airport when I flew in and everyone there did the "ahhhhhh" thing and made me tear up. I love them so much and they have grown so much. I can hardly believe it. My niece Samantha just turned 6, E-bay is now 5 and Race will soon be 4....

A couple weeks ago I assisted Cheryl (In-A-Frame) with a wedding at Willow's Lodge. After the scorching weather they had here (while I was fortunately at home visiting and freezing, in North Dakota), the day of the wedding turned out to be a terrific temperature. The wedding was beautiful, the food was delicious and I have never seen so many people on the dance floor at a reception. What a perfect day!

I helped Theresa with a wedding before I headed back home. It was a very cool Scottish wedding. The groom, his brother and father all wore kilts. I wasn't sold on them before, but I am now! The ceremony was given by the dad of the groom and he gave a lot of interesting facts. I have been reading a series regarding the same type of history and it was very interesting to listen to.

Allison has been my longest friend EVER....I think we met each other when we were about 4. Well, she got married this last month and they flew me down for their wedding. I brought along my camera (of course) and did some photos at the grooms dinner and of them getting ready....

Allison, her sister (maid-of-honor) April and Claire (a bridesmaid), are all hairdressers. So, they did everyones hair for the wedding. That included the bride, all the bridesmaids, the wives and girlfriends of the groomsmen, the mothers of the bride/groom AND me! :) Needless to say, they were pretty busy all morning....

Dan did not get to see Allison before the wedding. So, I made sure I was up there with my camera to get his first look. He was so happy...It was hard getting a steady shot cuz he was making me cry... :)

This is Allison's nephew Reid and his Grandma....I just love the connections between little ones with their Grandmas....

Summer life.....

We have another resident who has made her home in the yard....Meet white spider crab....She made herself a home on one of the crocosmia leaves. It is very cool...She folded the top part of the leaf over and webbed around it and she lives up in the top....

We also saw one of these green shield bugs while we were looking at the new blooms. Have never seen one of these before. For some reason, they aren't as creepy when you look at them up close as they are when they're flying around you.... =)

And, I HAVE to brag up my aunt a little bit. (Everyone knows she is my best supporter in photography!) She called me one day on my break at work, and I talked her through the steps to use my camera. (This included how to put in the battery and card)....Ha...And what she came up with that day is absolutely amazing....She has so much talent. Now, I just hope we can find her a camera so we can go out shooting together. (Remember to click on the images for a better peak)..

I love this one....I love the feet hanging off the bottom. Makes me think he's walking on a tightrope...And I love his "tiny little feet."

Sneak Peak: Heather & her girls.....

Yesterday was probably the most beautiful day in Washington since I moved here. I decided that on the way home because it was so clear I had a view of Mt Ranier. There was a Nodak-style sunset with the reds and pinks, mountains and trees. It was so absolutely beautiful I just wanted to keep driving.

That wasn't the only beautiful thing I saw that day. I photographed Heather with her girls at Jennings Park. They don't have any images of all 4 of them together, so I was glad to help out with that. :) Here are a couple of the many great images that were captured.

Mike's Mini-Session

Memorial weekend, Mike and I went to Whidbey Island. I brought along my camera and sadly, he didn't. :) I did a little mini-session of him at Fort Casey and he used my camera and got some great shots with the macro and of a ninja-deer. Yes, a ninja deer.

The bleeding hearts are sooooo beautiful. I love the little water drops at the bottom. I am fascinated with every little detail of these. I will post a closer shot soon, so you can be too.

And then, exploring through the yard, we stopped to photograph some new growth on an old mossy log we have been keeping an eye on. While standing there, my aunt told me to look up and see how cool this was. This tree was so awesome with all of the branches shooting out in every direction. It kind of reminded me of that game with all the sticks and marbles. You take turn pulling out a stick hoping no marbles fall through. Fun. If anyone knows what the name of that is, let me know. Now I want to play. =)

Anyway, after a few photos, it just wasn't capturing on camera what we were seeing with our eyes. It was amazing. But, now that I have them on my computer, I still think they look pretty incredible. What a beautiful tree.

And, probably a month ago I went to the water in Everett to take some photos and walk around. It was really late, so I didn't get many shots as the light faded fast. I think Mike is trying to be an adventurer here or something??

And, last but not least....We had (and hopefully still have) a new tenant living at our house. Although, this tenant doesn't pay rent and probably does more damage to the yard than helpfulness. It was so tiny. Just basically a handful of a bunny. I hope it comes around again soon.

A wedding at the Hollywood School House...

I assisted at another wedding with Theresa earlier this month. I have been seriously slacking on my blogging duties.

Anyway, Shaun and Katie got married at the Hollywood School House. What a beautiful location for the wedding. Perfect natural light and lots of cool spots to take photos.

I absolutely loved that the guys all wore vans. Even the adorable little ring-bearer did.

Another trek through the yard....

Another 65 degree day, so of course it was spent outside. This time we ventured off a little farther than the yard. We saw some different flowers than the day before, but equally as beautiful.

Trilliums....

Skunk Cabbage....And yes, it really does smell like skunk.

Here is a HUGE tree trunk that was once cut and then grew out and around itself again. It really is big. I didn't have a volunteer to stand next to it to show the actual size, but it was ginormous.

And Sadie loved playing outside. She got completely full of mud and needed a bath by the end of the day.

Spring is here!

Today was absolutely beautiful! It is officially spring. This morning I was out taking photos and the sun was shining. I stood there for a very long time loving the feeling of it warming my whole body. Then, I got to drive with my windows down in short sleeves. Yup, that pretty much sums it up. Spring is here.

Here are some new growth found with a walk through the yard. I'm going to try to keep my blog updated with nature images fairly often. (I know those of you back home probably will enjoy "seeing" spring, since it may be awhile until you do.)

But first, I have to start with a couple recent shots of Sadie. She makes me happy every day, and I think I should share those smiles with you.

"What do ya hear Sadie?" ....

This is a mushroom that part of the outer wall was torn off. Now you know what the inside of a mushroom looks like. Very cool.

We aren't sure what these are, but they are very cool. Imagine the tiniest, itty bittiest, little thing you can imagine. Ok, now these are smaller than that. Seriously. Here they are compared to a quarter in size. It will be interesting to see what they grow into.

A wedding at the Manor....

I got to help Theresa with another wedding last weekend. This one was at the Manor. What a completely cool location for a wedding. There were 3 floors and had a balcony overlooking the main floor so were a lot of angles and potential for some rad shots. The outside grounds were very awesome too. It was cold and rainy, but we were able to get a few outdoor photos before it really started to rain. Here are just a few of the many many images we got from Devin & Christine's wedding.

During some bride/groom photos, some of the groomsmen showed up in the background "hopping" through. They definitely provided some funny entertainment that night.

And how incredible is this little dude? He was the ring-bearer, but also loved to dance. Once the music started playing, people formed a circle around him and he did a little breakdancing. :)

Tots to Teens - Sandy Puc

Yesterday I had the privilege of going to Sandy Puc's seminar "Tots to Teens." She wanted anyone who had a blog to blog about their experience because that's the way she will be able to come back next year. People have to have an interest. Well, I had a great time. She is so full of energy and I learned so much. She is so great working with kids and had so many different ideas and techniques that I have not thought of before. I wont' tell you what they are - you'll have to go find out for yourself! I can't wait until she comes back next year to teach about families. (She has a 5 year seminar prepared).

She has 25 more cities to go to before May. So, those of you that read this, should check out her site and see if you can make it to one of her seminars. (People back home.....She will be in Minneapolis on April 29th)....I do recommend getting your tickets now, as they have been selling out in some cities.

On another note.....I am offering custom senior art albums this year. They are coming back looking absolutely STUNNING. Be sure to ask me about them if you are interested. (Albums don't have to only be for senior photos).

Last week I helped Theresa with a wedding in Everett. The church had beautiful stained glass windows and was surprisingly really big. It was a fun day with a lot of happy faces. This little guy was the ring-bearer and grandson of the groom. How adorable is he??

Chelan - Outdoor part 2

We had sun and beautiful weather. YAY. Chelan, her sister Sydney and I decided to head out to take advantage of the weather and finish up Chelan's senior photos. The traffic was horrible, but we stayed entertained reading many many signs of protesters, trying to figure out what they were talking about. By the time we arrived at our location, we had some time to get in some shots before we lost the light. We came up with some beautiful images.

I wanted to get a few of the 2 together. Sydney was more than happy to hug Chelan. I asked them if they were "huggy" sisters in real life. Sydney said she tries, but Chelan not so much. I had to laugh because that was the same way I was with my younger sister growing up. But, they were good sports and it's always fun to see them.

Sarah contacted me to do a maternity session with me. We had to set it up within a couple days of e-mail because she is due on the 20th, but ready to have her little guy any day. We took some in-studio shots and will possibly be doing some outdoor photos this weekend (cross your fingers for no more snow). She brought in her almost 3 year old daughter who eventually warmed up to the camera once Grandma came in to make her smile. Aren't grandmas so much fun? :)

Beautiful Light

When I got home today, the light was so beautiful on the driveway. I had to quickly grab my camera and run up there. It changed so fast that it was even different than what I had originally seen when driving down. But, wow, how beautiful!

Lucid - Awesome Jazz Bar in the U District

Sydney got a great make-up gig this past weekend at Lucid. I brought my camera with in case I had some opportunities to take some photos. Lucky for me, I did. They hired Mike, a photographer who is just starting out to build his portfolio. What a great opportunity, as this was a photo-shoot for a dress designer/party planner (Naomi), set in Lucid - a new jazz bar in the U-District. (Wow, a lot of links in that paragraph).

After the session, there was enough time for me to try out an idea I had to advertise not only for the designer, but also for the jazz bar itself. Later, I will be posting some fun images that Mike captured of Sydney and me.

I wanted some shots of Sydney applying make-up to Lisa, but there was very low lighting conditions in the bar. I decided instead to go outside and shoot through the window and got some cool shots.

Wow. It's already 2009!

2008 was a great year for me. I graduated from college (again) and made the big move out to Washington state! I am loving every minute of being here and being able to do what I enjoy. Below is some of the many, many faces of the 2008 year.

Hickok Family Portraits

Hopefully these will be the last of the "snow sessions." I am eager for it to just go away already. Yesterday I went up and photographed the Hickok family. It was mom and dad's anniversary and the 8 year old granddaughter made it up for the portrait as a surprise. They were very excited to see her there and what a great chance to get nice photos of the whole family.

We ran outside for a couple very fast photos. We didn't realize how cold it was outside, but wanted to get some shots with the snow.

98 Family Christmases

This year was Eleanor's 98th Christmas. Wow. How amazing to be able to say you have had that many Christmases with your loved ones. This year, they celebrated in Seattle and I was lucky enough to be able to be there to photograph them.

The weather and driving conditions were icky, but we were troopers and made it with no problems. They served a delcious Thanksgiving-style meal and took some great family photos as you'll see below. What a fun group!

I absolutely loved how tall his shoes were and was hoping to get some sort of an image like this to distort them.

Here is a group shot of the grandkids. I had to wait to make sure Kevin smiled. :)

2008 Snow Fall

I went outside and took some photos (and played) after 14 inches of snow!! Wow. That is a lot of snow. I am from North Dakota, but even I think that is a lot of snow. Of course I ventured out with my camera and tried a little snow stunts. Needless to say, I should probably work a little harder on my form.

And Sadie came out to play too, although it was a little harder for her to keep up.

A day in Seattle...

We had 2 quick last minute mini-sessions to get the yearbook photo in time for the deadline. We took some fun shots in the leaves and the next day came back for some in-studio shots. I love these images. Nate has an "issue" with feet and so it was perfect with him in his shoes and the rest with bare feet. It did gross him out so he laid down....

So here's the scoop....I was shopping at antique stores and found 2 awesome chairs that I loved. They were priced a little out of my range, so I figured I would ask about bartering. Lucky for me, one of the owners needed some headshots for her son's yearbook photo. We went down to Lewis Park (right after the whole robber/innertube/craigslist fiasco) and took some nice headshots.

2009 Senior Stephanie

Stephanie and I went to Kirkland with my previous senior Rachel and we did their outdoor sessions. Then, today Stephanie came into the studio and we did a few more. Here are some that I have edited. She had a very cute dress today and we have a bunch of fun shots of her swinging her dress back and forth. Cute images for a possible storyboard....She is such a smiley girl. It was definitely work for her to get her "serious face" on, but she did it!

Labor Day Labors of Love.....

The lighting on the next two shots was very severe. We shot at night with only the outside light on the garage for use. It was very windy and cold. I was elevated with the subject standing directly under the light fixture.

In this shot the subject was leaning against the building with the wind blowing her hair off her face. I think there was more elevation in this shot. I was trying for shadowing on the right side of her face, while leaving a triangle of light under her eye. This dramatic style draws your eye directly into the subjects eye. (By the way, the subject is my aunt....I hope that I look that good 20 years from now!!) Rawwwrrrrr......

The next two shots are of Hunter and Zoe's Family. The site was beautiful as you can see. The lighting was perfect. This family is very photogenic. Look at Kris' (moms) eyes, you can see her joy and personality.

Look at this picture with Kris and her kids. You can clearly see the joy, happiness and comedic acceptance in Kris' eyes. She brings this to all her friends and family, especially her babies. Some shots are easy, the lighting, setting and subjects couldn't be better. I wish they were all like this.

I am still deathly afraid of spiders, but I must say I am getting braver....This spider moved a couple seconds after I photographed it and I ran screaming brushing off my clothes....Eventually, I think, I will be able to photograph one WITHOUT running.... :) (By the way, clicking on the image enlarges it and gives a more detailed photograph).

This is the crack between the sections in my Auntie's patio....I laid here for quite awhile photographing the different angles. Something about this area definitely draws me into it. Awesome!

Hunter and Zoey!

Last weekend I went to Eastern Washington and got to photograph Hunter and Zoey. It was really fun. These kids had the greatest expressions (as you can see below) and these are just a few of my favorites from their session.

This image is funny to me. Hunter told me his eyes were very sensitive to the light. So, I told him we would play a little game and I would count to three and when I said "three" to open his eyes really quickly and I would snap the picture. Well, Zoey had fun with that, but Hunter apparently didn't want to risk damaging his eyes! :)

Erik was to leave in a week to go back to Iraq and they decided it would be a good time to get photos taken. I had the privilege of taking them. We took some right at her job site and then we headed to Kirkland to finish them up by the water. Here are a few from that session.

This is too cute......I love feet shots and the puppy paws definitely adds to this one... :)

At the very end it was completely dark out and we thought it would be fun to try some under the bright bulbs on this building. I like the way it turned out...Very cool....

This session with Ethan was great! His personality is evident in his eyes. He even deigned to show us glimpses of his other moods through his listening skills. You couldn't ask for a better subject or little friend.

How expressive his expression is here. I love the contrast between the fence color and his face. Also the pop of green in his jacket.

I love the juxtaposition of the crispness of his face and the blurred out containers on either side of him. It pulls your eye right into his eye while giving interest and color pops in this shot.

Jodi so captured the emotion Ethan was feeling in this shot. The garage door was going up and his littler sister saw the bikes first. She said WHOOAAA! Then as the door continued up Ethan caught site of the bikes and exclaimed DUDE!! He looks like one of the guys here; discussing the intricacies of this bike.

Today I got to photograph a huge banner for a 50th birthday party. He was a baseball coach and a lot of his players came to hold the sign as he drove by the park. It was very cool how many people showed up to support him and it was really fun to be able to use my new wide angle lens too. :)

This is a new thing I just got into in the last week. My Aunt has beautiful flowers and plants and is good at actually keeping them alive! She has been teaching me the names of them and in the process I have been photographing them. I absolutely love it. I will be selling these as a series (or individually). Hopefully soon I will be purchasing a macro lens so I can continue taking beautiful images.

Just kidding....Adam and Amanda are NOT engaged, but we thought it would be fun to do a fake engagement session. Actually, I thought it would be fun and they just happened to be the lucky couple I chose!!

I have to say one of the most intimidating thing to do as a photographer is to photograph other photographers. Lucky for me, Adam and Amanda are BOTH photographers. Today I did a photoshoot of some of the girls from Charisma Hair Salon. (From left; Allison, April and Katie) all recently passed their color tests. We went downtown and took some of these fun shots.

We had a lot of weird weather to deal with and it was REALLY windy, but I think they turned out pretty awesome! Thanks girls!

Because I had very limited time in North Dakota this summer, I wanted to make sure I got some shots of my niece and nephews. These images truly depict their characters. Samantha the sweet and charming (or so you think).....

Ethan and his love for rocks...He is very serious about the things he loves. After this shot he gave the rock a bath AKA threw it as far as he could into the lake....

and then there's Race....Nothing hurts this boy....I loved the shots with his band-aid on his head! He is such a silly boy.....

and I had to add this one.....Sam considers herself the "worm lady" but will not touch them with her bare hand. She will hold them all day long if she can, but she will wear that glove all day too. :)

I am going to miss these kids like crazy!!

So, even though I am not a "cat" person, I have a blast every time I head to Claudia's with a camera! She has 7 cats and this was the second one I photographed. Eventually, we plan to do all 7 AND the dog!!

So, Sam is the oldest of her cats and he has not been outside for 18 years!! So, what does Claudia suggest? Let's take Sam outside!! We did and are definitely not disappointed.

Some of the funniest shots were just watching Sam play under the bench.

I can't wait to photograph the next cat....It will definitely be an interesting session...It is the silliest looking cat I have ever seen (in a good way). Hopefully will be coming soon....

Andrew is ONE!!

It seems like I just finished editing Andrew's photos from when he was just born! Wow, he has grown a lot, but still has those beautiful eyes!! We had a fun little session with Andrew for his one year photos. He had a lot of silly expressions....

Then of course, I just love this one of the family!

This was definitely Andrew's favorite part of the session. He smiled and laughed the whole time daddy helped him walk....

And as skeptical as mommy was about the "foot shot," I think it turned out adorable...

Miller Family

I had the opportunity to photograph Vicki's family a couple weeks ago. What a beautiful family! I met Vicki while working at the State's Attorney's Office. This was probably the last nice day in Fargo. It has rained ever since.

Anyway, her nephews were GREAT assistants. They helped with posing, carrying stools and climbing trees. Those boys are so creative!

The boys loved having silly faces....Editing Berg (the one on the left) was somewhat disturbing as I realized he turned his eyelids INSIDE-OUT!! Ahhhh!!
